Find a Job in Alaska

The first thing you need to know is that in order to work in Alaska you have to be a citizen of the United States of America. Yes, Alaska is a State in America. I know you are probably thinking "tell me something I don't know" but I have met a lot of people that have no idea about Alaska or that it is in deed a state not to mention the largest state in the union. Alaska does not assist in helping to find work for foreign nationals.

Do not move to Alaska before you have a job. Alaska has a hire Alaskan's first policy and you are not considered an Alaskan resident until you have lived in the state for a minimum of one year and typically Alaska has sufficient well qualified people to fill most job openings. Make sure you have adequate financial resources and a round trip ticket back home if you are flying. Remember that jobs in Alaska pay more than in other states but, it also has the highest cost of living. The road system in Alaska is very limited and most parts of Alaska are only accessible by air or sea. That makes those villages in Alaska called the "bush" very expensive to live in assuming that you can find housing. There is currently no homesteading available. But, don't despair there is still hope for those with the dream of moving and living in Alaska.

The jobs in Alaska are mostly not in the three main cities which are Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks but in the villages of Nome, Kotzebue, and Barrow. These places are extremely expensive to live in. Not to mention that in the winter months in these northern villages you will not see the sun for a period of months and during mid-summer there is no nightfall.

The Internet is a great place to start your search for a job in Alaska but, research the company and never pay for Alaska job information. If the ad states "big bucks" or "guaranteed" move on to another website.

Jobs that are available in Alaska now are in the healthcare industry and teaching but, these jobs are also located in the bush. In the summer most seafood processing plants, hotels and restaurants are hiring but they do layoff again in the winter months. The oil and gas industry have taken a hit in the last few months and even they are laying off. So, do not come to Alaska thinking you are going to get a high paying unskilled pipeline job.

Living in Alaska is wonderful and exciting if you can find housing, a job and adjust to the hard winters and being so far from friends and family.
