Typical Interview Questions for Engineering Jobs

The purpose of an engineering job interview is for the interviewer to get to know you well enough to decide whether you are qualified to pass on to the next phase of the hiring process, which might be a second interview or being chosen as the candidate for the position. You want to show yourself in the best light by answering questions well. You can do this best by anticipating the questions and preparing for them.

Salary

Many, if not most, interviewers will ask the question of salary expectation in some form or other. It's good to come to the interview having already done research on what the position is likely to pay, but if you are forced to name a number you risk placing yourself above the range an employer expects to pay. The best choice is to state that you need to know more information about the position before you can state a number, or give a range based on your research.

Software Knowledge

Many engineering jobs involve using computers that run specialized software. If you are familiar with many different software packages, write up a list and take it to the interview. Divide the various software titles into categories, either based on how familiar you are with each or by the type of software. For example, you can list all of the software you have been trained to use, grouping it by the tiles you feel you know very well down to titles you have used a few times.

Keeping Current with Technology

An interviewer is likely ask you what you do to stay informed on advances in engineering technology. In addition to any training you have received recently, list reading you do to keep up-to-date. Name specific publications and websites.

Teamwork and Dealing with Customers

Depending on the nature of the job, you could be asked what experience you have working on a team or working with customers. List specific experience that has prepared you for this type of work.

Problem Solving

It's in the nature of engineering to solve problems. If you're asked about this, prepare anecdotes from both your personal and professional life where you had to solve a problem that involved quick and creative thinking.
